BB 111 — INTRODUCTION TO BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOPHYSICS RESEARCH

Course content: BB111 is a class for freshman students majoring in Biochemistry/Biophysics. It is designed to introduce students to the numerous research opportunities available to them, both in this department and affiliated ones. It is not required for students taking the major, but is strongly advised. Class meetings will serve to introduce students to the research faculty, provide tours of the research facilities, and connect students with advisors and fellow students. In addition to the introduction to BB as a research department, the first two weeks will be devoted to orienting students to campus facilities, such as the OSU library, financial aid, etc. A tentative schedule is listed below. The class is pass/no pass and students will be assessed on the basis of two quizzes about their knowledge of what has been presented to them in class.

Week 1: Introductions, Survey of Student Requests
Week 2: Campus facilities tours – library, financial aid, others as requested in survey
Week 3: Departmental tour, BB Faculty Speaker
Week 4: Two BB Faculty Speakers
Week 5: Two BB Advisor Speakers
Week 6: Two BB Faculty Speakers
Week 7: Two BB Faculty Speakers
Week 8: Two BB Faculty Speakers
Week 9: Two BB Faculty Speakers
