BB 331 — INTRODUCTION TO MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Prerequisite: CH 122, CH 222 or equivalent

Course content: A course based on molecular biology which will enable students to understand biotechnology and its impact on society. Major topics presented: recombinant DNA technology, cloning, gene therapy, mutations, oncogenes, AIDS, cancer. 30% of the student's grade in the course will come from analysis of the ethical, economic, and legal aspects of the use of biotechnology in our world.

Curricular purpose of the course: This course meets the criteria for a Science, Technology, and Society course in the Synthesis part of the Baccalaureate Core Curriculum. We will emphasize practical applications of recent discoveries in molecular genetics and biochemistry, and include discussion of some of the ethical and public policy issues involved in applying molecular biology to solutions of societal problems.
