BB 405H — HONORS COLLOQUIUM— The News of Science

BB405H 2 credits CRN Winter Mathews

Although this colloquium has a Biochemistry/Biophysics number, it is not strictly a biochemistry course.

The excitement of current developments in science is chronicled each week in the News and Comments sections of Science, the magazine published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to research papers, each week’s issue contains several news articles, scientific commentaries, editorials, and letters to the editor dealing with breakthrough discoveries and applications in biological, physical, computational, and environmental science, written at a level appropriate to the well-educated lay person. Many of these items deal also with the most important issues of science and public policy, such as the implications of cloning technology, stem cell research, and genetic privacy. Students will access the journal electronically, through the Valley Library and prepare both oral and written reports on articles of their choice.

Prerequisites: One term of biological science and two terms of physical science, or one term physical science and two terms biological science and upper-division standing, or by permission of the instructor.
