Admission to the Graduate Program
IMPORTANT NOTE: APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE MAILED DIRECTLY TO THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOPHYSICS. THERE IS NO APPLICATION FEE.
- Students wishing to be admitted to the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Oregon State University should apply directly to the department (forms are available directly from this web site). A complete application consists of: (1) a completed application form, (2) the applicant's narrative Statement of Purpose, (3) three letters of recommendation (on letterhead stationary), (4) transcripts of all college-level academic work, and (5) scores in the Graduate Record Examination. (Contrary to instructions on the application form, there is no application fee and applications materials should be submitted directly to: Graduate Program, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, ALS2011, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331).
- Generally, a successful applicant will have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 (on a scale of 4) and combined GRE aptitude scores of 1200 for Verbal, Quantitative and 3.5 for Analytical, or will present comparable evidence indicative of probable success in graduate school. Foreign applicants must score 213 or better on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). To be admitted in good standing a student should have completed a bachelor's degree program in chemistry, physics, or a biological science. The typical applicant will have at least one year of general physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biology, and mathematics through calculus.
- In general, all graduate students accepted into the Ph.D. program are offered financial support.
