Summer Undergraduate Research at Oregon State University

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) funds a summer undergraduate research program at OSU. Aimed at students who have an interest in biological research and who are in their freshman, sophomore, or junior years, the program provides support (about $3900) per student for 11 weeks) for students to work in conjunction with a sponsoring faculty mentor to do full time research during the summer. About 40 students are accepted into the program each year. At the end of the summer, a symposium is held at which all student participants give a 15-20 minute talk discussing findings from their work. Applications for the program are made available in late January of each year and require a sponsoring faculty mentor. If you need help in finding a mentor and/or would like to get on the list to receive an application, please contact the program director, Dr. Kevin Ahern, at ahernk@onid.orst.edu.

The summer of 2008 was the tenth year of our successful program. A summary of the research results and presentations of the students in each year is summarized via the links below:

1999 / 2000 / 2001 / 2002 / 2003 / 2004 / 2005 / 2006 / 2007 / 2008

NOW AVAILABLE: The 2009 HHMI Summer Undergraduate Research Program Application. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors interested in biological research are encouraged to apply. If a student is interested, but does not have a mentor, Dr. Kevin Ahern will also be happy to help them identify a mentor. Please check out these FAQs for more information.
